Luz Saúde investis the most in R&D in Health Sciences
Luz Saúde, with 3.1 million euros, is the hospital institution investing the most in Research and Development activities (R&D) in the area of Health Sciences, according to the latest Inquiry on the National Scientific and Technologic Potential (IPCTN), published by the General Directorate of Education and Sciences Statistics, which involved 83 entities.
In global terms, considering also the other two areas covered by the enquiry (basic medicine and clinical medicine), Luz Saúde is the third institution with the largest investment volume – around 8.9 million euros – immediately after the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto (9.4 million euros) and Centro Hospitalar Universitário de S. João (9.5 million euros).
These 2021 numbers reveal a continuous increase in the group’s global effort of investment, rising from 6.9 million euros in 2020 to nearly 9 million euros.
The IPCTN 2021:
- Provides a list of the hospital institutions with the highest expenditure in R&D activities registered in 2021, representing over 90% of R&D in this subsector, both in terms of expenditure and in terms of human resources;
- Was addressed, in March 2022, to a total of 83 hospital institutions corresponding to 400 units potentially enforcing R&D, enquired in the implementation sectors of State (369) and businesses (31).
- Luz Saúde arises in the third place in the global ranking and, as it was already the case in 2020, it is the private group with the largest investment volume in R&D.
- Disaggregating expenditures by R&D area, Luz Saúde tops the list of hospital institutions investing the most in Health Sciences and arises in fourth place (with 5.6 million euros) among those with the largest investment in clinical medicine.
